FAQs

Moodle Resources for Staff

Introduction

Moodle is the new virtual learning environment (VLE) for the University and replaced WebCT in September 2009. Moodle can be used to deliver online materials, with the aim of enhancing students' learning experiences.

Moodle originally was an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, but everyone now just calls it "Moodle".

It is useful to see Moodle as a virtual classroom where materials can be made available by a module tutor. The benefit of this online facility is that you can enter this virtual classroom from anywhere in the world at any time providing you have access to an Internet connection and a web browser.

Advantages of using Moodle:

  • Immediate access to important course information and material.
  • Additional learning tools, such as forums and quizzes (self tests).
  • The freedom to access course materials at any time and away from campus.

Moodle is web-based and as such requires no specialist software to be installed. Tutors and students require only a web browser on their computer. Moodle can be used to create entire online courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing modules.

FAQs

How do I access Moodle?

You can access Moodle via the “Login to e-learning” link at the top of the Current Students page on the University website.

Click on “Login to e-learning” and select “Moodle” from the drop down menu.

Enter your University username (your student number prefixed with a lower case 's') and password.

Please note: The login system is case sensitive, which means you must use a lower case 's' before your student number.

Alternatively, you can use the direct URL for Moodle, which is http://moodle.glos.ac.uk.

Please note: There is no ‘www.’ before ‘moodle’, so check that you have typed in the correct URL.

Can I access Moodle from home?

Yes, if you have access to the Internet at home, you can access Moodle.

Moodle works on various platforms including PCs, Macs, and Linux. Older versions of web browsers may not handle CSS and HTML correctly which may cause problems to the way the site is displayed. If you experience problems with the display of Moodle please contact lts@glos.ac.uk for assistance.

I can't login to Moodle.  Am I doing something wrong?

First of all, check that you are typing in the correct user name and password. For your username, you need to type in your seven digit student number preceded by a lower case 's', for example, 's1234567'. Then type in your password. This will give you access to your Moodle home page, where your Moodle sites are listed.

The mistake that many people make is inadvertently putting the caps lock on. The logon system is case sensitive so check this next.

Why aren't all of my modules listed when I login to Moodle?

Moodle is linked directly to the University's student record system, so if you are registered on a module that has a Moodle site then you should automatically have access to this resource.  However, if you know that you are registered for a module which has a Moodle site and this information is not displayed, then please contact Learning Enhancement & Technology Support: lts@glos.ac.uk; 01242 71(4440).

Please note that not every module has a Moodle site.  It is the module tutor’s decision whether it is appropriate to have a Moodle site or not.

I am having problems opening files within Moodle.  How can I solve this?

Firstly, please check that you have the software application installed on your computer e.g. Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. You can download a PowerPoint viewer, Adobe PDF viewer or Adobe Flash player.

Secondly, if you are viewing Moodle from your home computer, your anti-virus protection may assume the files are pop-ups and stop them from being opened. Please check your anti-virus system as there is usually a way of over-riding the pop-up blocker. Modern browsers also have pop-up blockers built in, please check this as there will be a way to turn this feature off within the browser.

When I open a PowerPoint presentation it appears blank.  What can I do?

This is a known issue with Microsoft Office 2007.  To view the PowerPoint properly you need to follow one of the options below (option 2 will provide a permanent solution on your personal computer):

  1. If the PowerPoint presentation is saved to the local machine and opened from this location then it should appear as normal.
  2. There is a 'hotfix' package available from Microsoft that fixes this problem.  Please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935869 for details.

How can I read files that have been created in Office 2007?

If you are using an older version of Microsoft Office (e.g. Office 2003), you may not be able to open documents that have been created using Office 2007.  It is possible to download a converter free-of-charge from Microsoft which will allow you to open, edit and save such documents.  See the Microsoft website.  (Note: you may have to download other updates prior to installing the converter.)

I am having trouble reading pdf documents.  What can I do?

You may need to update the Adobe Reader.  This can be downloaded free-of-charge from the Adobe website.

What does the '404 - File or directory not found' message mean?

The '404 — File or directory not found ' message appears when a link is broken in Moodle. Please contact your module tutor with details of the error.  Alternatively, you can contact Learning Enhancement & Technology Support (LETS): lts@glos.ac.uk with the details and we will forward them on to the tutor.
