Alex Steele is a specialist in environmental management, corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.  Alex’s background is in the commercial sector, where he worked with Enviros (formerly Aspinwall & Company) in the environmental consultancy sector.  At the University of Gloucestershire, Alex directs a wide range of external projects, working principally with businesses in Gloucestershire and the South West.  He acts as Project Director for a range of programmes which aim to provide advice and training to organisations, in areas including resource efficiency, waste minimisation, environmental management systems, ISO14001, EMAS, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, life cycle analysis, environmental impact assessment, sustainability appraisal, strategic environmental assessment, carbon management, and environmental policy and legislation.

Alex heads a variety of teams conducting consultancy and training work with businesses, and he works in partnership with external organisations, including the Environment Agency, the Carbon Trust, the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, Business Link, Envirowise and the Government Office for the South West.  He is Director of the Gloucestershire Green Business Club, Chairman of the Gloucestershire Environmental Business Forum, and Director of Horizon South West, the regional environmental business support organisation for the south west region.

In addition to his work with external partners, Alex also teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.  Alex was until recently the Course Leader for the MA/MSc Programme in Environmental Policy & Management for a 5-year period, and External Examiner at the University of Wales for their postgraduate programme in environmental management.  Alex utilises the wide range of contacts in business and government linked to consultancy and training projects, providing opportunities for students to engage in active learning projects.  These projects provide opportunities for students to work with real organisations, on sites throughout the UK and beyond, which becom e the focus for student projects, independent study and dissertations.  The resulting experiences and outcomes for the participating organisations and the students provide excellent opportunities for teaching and learning.

Alex also leads a range of international projects.  For several years, he ran a long-standing field trip to Hungary, in particular during the period following the end of the communist era, through the early 1990’s, and on to the country’s achievement of becoming a European Union member state.  Alex currently leads a partnership project with Uganda, where UK students link with organisations in Africa to conduct a wide range of research projects, in areas including environmental protection, community development, health and education.  Alex has also represented the university for numerous trade missions in China, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

In addition to Alex’s key roles in environmental management, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, Alex is more widely known in the areas of change management, leadership development and innovation, with a particular focus on creating and sustaining behavioural change within teams and organisations, to tackle the challenges and opportunities of sustainability and environmental performance.
