I started teaching at the University in 2006 on a part time basis before becoming a Lecturer in Biological Sciences in September 2007. My research interests centre around evolutionary and behavioural ecology, particularly the ways in which species interact with their biotic and abiotic environments. Ornithology is my particular passion — anything connected with avian biology, behaviour, reproduction and evolution fascinates me. My current research focuses on the factors influencing nest-site choice and reproductive success in three bird species: blue tit, great tit and pied flycatcher. I am also interested in how climate change might alter species’ phenology and distribution. My research is of an applied nature, having relevance to species conservation and habitat management. I use a range of field, laboratory, and analysis methods in my research and am always keen to develop or enhance techniques to aid research into biology and ecology.
I teach several modules at the University, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. My teaching uses lecture-based learning, seminars, workshops, fieldwork, lab work, and computer analysis and modelling. I try to link theory and its practical application wherever possible.
