Department of Natural and Social Sciences

Centre for Research in Applied Cognition, Knowledge, Learning and Emotion (CRACKLE)

Staff and graduate students with a research interest in brain processes underlying aspects of cognition in applied contexts meet regularly in the Centre for Research in Applied Cognition, Knowledge, Learning and Emotion (CRACKLE) to discuss their research and develop collaborative projects. Current and recent research grant funds exceed £300,000 and have been obtained from British Academy, Headway Head Injury Trust, MoD Competition of Ideas as well as ESRC. The centre also has external members from the University of the West of England (UWE) and Bristol Royal Infirmary as well as two visiting fellows working on a fireground situation —awareness project

Research programmes include:

  • attention and situation awareness in natural contexts including military, obstetric and fireground situations (Graham Edgar, Dritan Nikolla, Di Catherwood, Sharon Davis, Steven Baker, Geoff Sallis, Andrew Medley)
  • cognitive function in brain-damaged populations and the influence of antipsychotic medication on cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia (Phil Tyson)
  • the needs of carers of individuals with acquired brain injury (Phil Tyson) (with Samantha Hall & Hilary Osborne )
  • cognitive processing in childhood, including infant attention to the visual field (Di Catherwood) and cognition in developmental disorders such as Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ADHD and Dyslexia (Colin Terrell)
  • the psychology of education (Helen Stivaros), especially: the teaching and learning relationship, improving educational performance, educational transitions
  • cognitive and emotional processing underlying social values and self-regulatory focus; nonconscious processes: specifically, the way in which are people are influenced beyond their awareness (Kerry Rees)
  • imagery in young sports performers (John Parker)

THE SPECIALIST CRACKLE LAB (Francis Close Hall)is a hub for Crackle research activity and meetings andincludes 128-channel dense-array EEG, eye-tracking & other psychophysiological apparatus primarily funded by research grants to Crackle members

Members of the Centre for Research in Applied Cognition, Knowledge, Learning and Emotion (CRACKLE) in the EEG laboratory

CRACKLE PROJECTS INCLUDE BOTH LABORATORY-BASED RESEARCH AS WELL AS RESEARCH IN THE WIDER WORLD:

EEG-LAB PROJECT EXAMPLE: One of the projects in the CRACKLE lab is funded by a £247,500 grant from the MoD obtained by Graham Edgar, Di Catherwood, Dritan Nikolla and Chris Alford to study decision-making under conditions of the kind that may underlie “friendly fire”. Dense-array EEG is being used to map brain activity in tasks that involve emotional arousal and uncertainty.

A SAMPLE OF OTHER CRACKLE PROJECTS:

Scoping the Fireground: Firefighter Situation-Awareness: CRACKLE has two Visiting Research Fellows: Geoff Sallis (Assistant Chief Fire Officer Gloucestershire FRS) and Dr. Andrew Medley (clinical psychologist at the Burden Neurological Institute and former Commander of Stroud Fire Station) who are working with Di Catherwood and Graham Edgar

Infant perception and cognition projects: Di Catherwood testing a young participant in the CRACKLE Infant Laboratory

Di Catherwood and Graham Edgar testing a young participant in the CRACKLE Laboratory in a study of working memory across the lifespan

Air-traffic control project: Graham Edgar conducting a study on the effects of fatigue on attention in a simulated air-traffic control task

Studying the effects of fatigue on attention in a simulated air-traffic control task (with Dr. Shayne Loft, University of Queensland)

PHD STUDENTS are a central part of CRACKLE and conduct high-quality research into aspects of decision-making both in and out of the laboratory:

Dritan Nikolla’s project (funded by the MoD research grant) is concerned with emotional arousal and somatic markers in situation awareness and time perception

Steven Baker’s project (funded by a university studentship) is concerned with emotional arousal and situation awareness

Sharon Davis’ project (which attained a GWR award) is concerned with obstetric decision-making in regard to foetal cardiac monitoring

CRACKLE TECHNICAL ADVISOR: DAVID BROOKES (fully trained on our EEG kit) offers a wide range of advice and support for CRACKLE activities:
