The Department of Humanities takes pride in delivering a range of exciting, stimulating and engaging courses across all its subject areas. Our aim is to provide an education in the humanities that has traditional breadth and depth, but that also recognises the contribution of our subject areas to cultural development, active citizenship, regional and local identities, and national and international economies.
Traditional Approaches Combined With Latest Technology
Based at the attractive Francis Close Hall campus, the Department of Humanities has the use of a newly re-developed learning centre; we offer a range of traditional resources and approaches (books, lectures, seminars, personal tutors), combined with the latest technology to support student learning (on-line course materials and support, data projectors, wireless 'hot-spots' and more).
External Links
Staff and students regularly venture beyond the campus into our wider communities. We have many, and ever expanding, links with theatres, bookshops and other venues throughout the county, including the annual Cheltenham Festival of Literature. New developments in religion, philosophy and ethics will also allow us to engage with a range of religious and other groups, both on and off campus.
New and Challenging Opportunities
We're constantly reviewing our programmes to offer new and challenging opportunities, and now have undergraduate degree courses in Creative Writing, English Literature, English Language, History, Religion, Philosophy & Ethics and Theology (Open Theological College).
We offer a range of subject combinations. You might choose to pursue a single honours degree in just one subject or take two subjects as a 'joint honours' degree.
You can also combine a subject offered by the Department of Humanities with one offered in another department. For example, should you have an interest in both sociology and english literature, you could pursue both - making for a course that matches what you want to study.
As well as our undergraduate work, the department offers a range of postgraduate courses, from taught MAs to PhD research opportunities. Humanities staff (including many high-profile researchers), along with our students, contribute to a lively atmosphere of debate and discussion.
