Writing a Reference

Academic staff are often asked to provide references for students.  The guidelines below advise staff on how to ensure best practice whilst at the same time adhering to the University Data Protection Policy.

When writing a reference:

• Ensure that the reference is factually accurate i.e. dates of study, course studied, classification of award etc.
• Avoid ambiguous language.
• Ensure that statements of fact are clearly differentiated from statements of opinion.
• Ensure that you are able to justify any comments.
• Retain a hard copy of the reference.
