Wireless Networking The wireless network is available in areas of all Learning Centres. All refectories and all Student Union bars are also covered. Please see the FAQ for further details. Accessing the wireless network involves setting up the Windows XP or Windows Vista wireless configuration and setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection. The VPN connection ensures the wireless user has a valid University username and password and provides a secure, encrypted wireless session to the University network. Accessing the Internet and the University network via the wireless network is subject to the same restrictions and conditions of use as the University of Gloucestershire VillaNet. Members of staff can access the wireless network by following the instructions supplied but these connections will be subject to the same restrictions as student access. Staff wireless devices not able to use a VPN can be connected but are controlled and configured by the ICT Systems team. If this service is required staff should log the request with the ICT Helpdesk on extension 4044 or by e-mail to ICT Helpdesk The University has tested laptops running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OSX. Machines running Windows 2000 should be fine accessing the wireless network, but cannot be guaranteed to work. Also, due to the vast number of wireless devices available not every wireless device on the market can be guaranteed to connect to the wireless network infrastructure installed at the University.
