University Security

There is a 24 hour security provision to the University throughout the year. The staff are uniformed and are expected to perform duties in a professional, courteous and efficient manner.

The main security objectives of the University are the provision of a safe, secure & welcoming environment to all students, staff & visitors and to ensure that there is a high standard of security and safety for the University, grounds, buildings and their contents.

The service incorporates a mobile response unit which visits external halls of residence at night and provides emergency response if required.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Controlling access to buildings by checking ID cards and ensuring visitors are logged and escorted as necessary. Carrying out security searches of bags/deliveries as required.
  • Patrolling buildings and grounds, checking the security and safety of premises and contents, reporting any defects, problems or concerns, taking action where necessary. Patrolling exterior and interior common areas of Campus residencies, reacting to noise and activities and making reports in the Incident/Occurrence report book.
  • Questioning, validating identity and as necessary detaining intruders, dealing with disorders, escorting and protecting cash, valuables or VIP's.
  • Operating and monitoring of security equipment including radios, pagers, telephones, CCTV, fire and intruder alarms; responding promptly and correctly to alarm activations; reporting all false alarms and alarm faults to the Campus Manager.
  • Operating, monitoring and controlling daily car parking activities including issuing enforcement notices.
  •  Locking and unlocking premises, ensuring the proper control, issue and receipt of keys, immediately reporting any loss or theft of such.
  • Following instructions and procedures and using initiative to deal with emergencies, incidents or accidents, including interaction with the police and other emergency services.
  • Liaising with security, domestic and other Estates Management staff to deliver an effective and helpful service and maintain excellent levels of communication and information.
  • Keeping a record of all occurrences, incidents and events in the incident occurrence report book and writing reports at the end of each shift.
