The University Council

Council is the University’s governing body and is responsible for the educational character and mission of the University, the approval of annual estimates of income and expenditure, the appointment of senior staff, and the Memorandum and Articles of Association that set out the formal governance arrangements of the University.

Council Membership

Council currently comprises eighteen members representing four constituencies:

• six members elected by the University’s religious foundation, of which at least two are clergy and at least two are lay;
• two members nominated by the Gloucestershire County Council in its capacity as the Local Education Authority;
• six independent members;
• four members from the University community, including the Vice-Chancellor, representatives for both academic and support members of staff, and the President of the Students’ Union.
