Pedagogic Tools and Guides

In this section you will find a range of guides to help you in the development of active learning.  These include an enquiry based learning planner and guides relating to the pedagogy of emerging technologies, which have the potential to enhance and expand the learning opportunities available to both staff and students.  CeAL is investing in a range of e-learning and m-learning resources, which can be used to provide active learning opportunities in the classroom and in the field.

Enquiry based learning planner

MS Word  Enquiry based learning planner (319Kb MS Word)

This planner has been created to provide a focus for discussion in the design and development of new courses and individual modules/learning activities.  It can also be used to aid reflection on existing courses and modules.  It is based upon learning design research (Reeves & Reeves, 1997; Oliver, 1999; AUTC, 2003 and Kahn & O’Rourke, 2004) and provides a means of recording and communicating discussions on curriculum developments; recording the results of conversations.  It is recommended that the planner be used as a prompt for discussion rather than as an individual planning document.

The planner consists of three elements.  These can be used together or the individual elements used for a specific purpose.

Course Development Course Review Module Development Module Review
a) A checklist that encourages a focus on enquiry based learning approaches, against which to discuss and outline choices in your planned development.  This can be used at different levels, with the course as whole or for single modules.

 b) A list of principles of good learning design, these act as an aide-memoire for reflecting on developments, course or module, as a whole

 c) A temporal plan, which is best used at the module/learning activity level.  Completing this plan provides a means of representing the learning activities, resources and supports required for a module or learning activity and the inter-relationships between them.

This planner is undergoing continual development; we would therefore welcome your feedback on its use.  Please send any comments or feedback to Martin Jenkins, CeAL Academic Manager.

Emerging technologies

The use of learning technology tools can, when integrated into the learning design, enhance and expand the student learning experience.  The use of technologies can also be important to reflect both authentic experiences for students and their expectations.

A wide range of learning technology tools are available to support active learning at the University of Gloucestershire.  These include institutionally supported systems such as the University VLE (WebCT Campus), online assessment tool (Questionmark Perception) and e-portfolio (PebblePad).  However these pages will focus on more specific resources being used by CeAL and how they can be used by both staff and students.  These include:

  • Tablet PCs
  • Interactive SMART boards
  • Portable plasma screens
  • Digital cameras
  • Digital audio recorders
  • Digital video recorders
  • iPods
  • MacBooks
  • Response systems

If you are interested in using any of these tools please contact Claire Hanson, CeAL Learning Technologist or Martin Jenkins, CeAL Academic Manager.
